Ski Areas and Towns

So, you’ve set up shop in Breckenridge, and now you’re wondering, where should I go skiing? Buckle up, ski bums and snow bunnies, because we’re taking a tour of the best ski destinations close to Breckenridge. We’re talking history, terrain, and how fast you can get there for a day of shredding. Let’s do this!

Breckenridge

Breckenridge Ski Resort

  • Vibe Check: The life of the party with a little something for everyone—whether you’re a first-timer or a seasoned pro.
  • Terrain Talk: Breckenridge is split into five peaks (creatively named Peak 6, 7, 8, 9, and 10) offering a smorgasbord of terrain. Peak 8 is the epicenter with friendly terrain and multiple terrain parks that have launched more pro skiers than you can count. Peak 10 is for those that like steep groomers and tight trees. Peak 6 has dreamy bowls for those who like their runs spicy, while Peaks 7 & 9 cater to cruisers and beginners who prefer their heart rate to stay below 180.
  • A Little History: Breckenridge opened in 1961, making it one of Colorado’s original ski towns that started as a wild mining hub back in the 1800s. While you won’t find gold panning in your lift ticket package, you will find one of the highest chairlifts in North America—Imperial Express—which, fun fact, will have you gasping for air at 12,840 feet (and not just because of the view).

Keystone, CO

  • Distance from Breckenridge: 15 miles (about 30 minutes)
  • Vibe Check: Family-friendly with a secret wild side (think après parties on Fridays)
  • Terrain Talk: With three mountains—Dercum, North Peak, and The Outback—Keystone’s got runs for everyone from rookie skiers to mogul masochists. The Outback is where experts go to hoot, holler, and try not to lose their lunch on those epic tree runs.
  • A Little History: Opened in 1970, Keystone’s claim to fame is its night skiing. Yep, when most slopes are tucking into bed, Keystone is just getting warmed up under the lights.

Copper Mountain, CO

  • Distance from Breckenridge: 18 miles (about 25 minutes)
  • Vibe Check: Chill with a sprinkle of Serious Terrain.
  • Terrain Talk: Copper is the poster child for natural progression. Beginners hang on the east side, intermediates in the middle, and experts get their thrills in the bowls up top. Terrain parks? Oh, they’ve got those too, with features that make pros sweat.
  • A Little History: Copper started in 1972 and quickly gained a reputation as the go-to spot for skiers who take their turns seriously. It’s where you come to impress your friends—or humble yourself when you realize 10-year-olds can send harder than you.

Arapahoe Basin (A-Basin), CO

  • Distance from Breckenridge: 20 miles (about 30 minutes)
  • Vibe Check: Old-school, no-frills, and a bit of a renegade. A-Basin is for those that like to ski hard and skip the lines.
  • Terrain Talk: Known as “The Legend,” A-Basin offers gnarly steeps, backcountry-style terrain, and the legendary East Wall, where the only thing scarier than the hike up is the thought of missing out on fresh tracks.
  • A Little History: One of the OG’s, A-Basin has been around since 1946 and holds the title for one of the longest ski seasons in North America. When most resorts are switching to mountain biking, A-Basin skiers are still chasing spring corn.

Loveland Ski Area, CO

  • Distance from Breckenridge: 33 miles (about 40 minutes)
  • Vibe Check: Locals’ favorite. No fancy stuff here, just big mountain vibes and some of the highest lift-served terrain in North America.
  • Terrain Talk: Perfect for powder hounds who love an underdog. With high-altitude bowls and stunning ridge hikes, Loveland’s a powder paradise when the storm hits.
  • A Little History: Founded in 1937, Loveland keeps things simple. It’s the place to go when you want to feel like you’re skiing with a bunch of old friends who just happen to all be strangers.

Vail, CO

  • Distance from Breckenridge: 39 miles (about 1 hour)
  • Vibe Check: Luxe. Think fur coats, five-star dining, and that guy who insists on calling it “après” with a French accent.
  • Terrain Talk: Spanning over 5,300 acres, Vail is the big cheese. It’s known for its Back Bowls—miles of untouched powder that will have you contemplating quitting your job, buying the sprinter van, and becoming the newest local living out of their car.
  • A Little History: Founded in 1962 by a couple of WWII veterans who thought, “Hey, this mountain looks nice,” Vail is now a world-class destination with the price tags to match. Fun fact: One of its co-founders was inspired by skiing in the Alps and decided Colorado could use a little slice of that action.

Beaver Creek, CO

  • Distance from Breckenridge: 48 miles (about 1 hour and 15 minutes)
  • Vibe Check: Posh, with a dash of exclusivity. It’s like the VIP section of Colorado ski towns.
  • Terrain Talk: Known for perfectly groomed runs and some gnarly expert terrain tucked away if you know where to look (Birds of Prey, anyone?). Plus, free warm cookies at 3 p.m. — what’s not to love?
  • A Little History: Launched in 1980 to be the host mountain for the 1976 Olympics (which were canceled), Beaver Creek still kept its top-tier ambitions. It’s basically the ski town equivalent of being stood up at prom and still showing up in a limo.

Frisco, CO (Ski Town Vibes Without Its Own Mountain)
  • Distance from Breckenridge: 9 miles (about 15 minutes)
  • Vibe Check: A small town, surrounded by huge mountains, full of cool shops and restaurants.
  • What It’s Known For: Frisco doesn’t have its own ski resort, but it’s the central hub for access to Breckenridge, Copper, and Keystone. It’s also home to the Frisco Adventure Park, where you can tube, sled, and pretend you’re training for the Winter Olympics.

And there you have it, folks. Eight awesome ski towns near Breckenridge, each with its own flavor and flurry of snow-covered fun. Whether you’re in it for the cookies at Beaver Creek or the steeps at A-Basin, there’s a slope—and a vibe—for everyone. Now, grab your skis and hit the road. Just don’t forget the sunscreen!
